The Wirt County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn residents of a telephone scam in which residents are being informed that they have Won monies from Publishers Clearing House. The calls are coming from the State of New York and are asking local residents to provide bank account information. The caller in this reported incident had the names of both the husband and wife as well as the last four digits of a social security number of the potential victim. The next scam involves someone calling and portraying a grandchild that has been arrested for DUI/etc. out of the country and needs money for bail. The Wirt County Sheriff’s Office advises the public to NEVER release personal or bank information to any unknown persons, especially over the phone. Scams come in all shapes and sizes. If you do not know the person you are talking to….. just hang up.
***SPAM ALERT***SPAM ALERT***
This information has been verified by Wirt County Sheriff’s Office.
People are receiving text messages stating that your account has been deactivated. It will give the first 4 digits randomly of a card number, and most calls are saying it says it is coming from Williamstown Bank or Pleasants County Bank. When you call the number they give you which is different that the number the text came from, all it will say is “Please enter your 16 digit card number” DO NOT ENTER YOUR NUMBER…. DO NOT!!!
If you try and call the number the text came from it is not a valid number.
Please friends of friends of friends share. Let’s be honest, some people might not realize it is a SCAM, and fall for it, and you could end of with your bank account being emptied. If you receive one of these PLEASE call your bank at their regular business number to confirm.
The Wirt County Sheriff’s Office is aware of this scam as well as Law Enforcement in the surrounding Counties.
